Matter and Memory (Work in progress)
The project is a reflection on the systems of coding, language and memory, in this case the memory as container of data. The main idea of the project is based on two references:
The magnetic core memories of computers from the 50´s – 60´s , that are actually real functional textiles, are made with copper wire and magnets. They work with ones and zeros and store information. This is a important element that link the concept memory and textile.
The second reference is the works by Anni Albers.
Anni Albers was interested in the linguistic systems based on ideographic signs of the precolumbian textiles. The piece CODE from1962 is a example of how she seeks to simulate words or phrases with drawing. That lines can remind us the Morse code (points ans lines). On the other hand, talking abut matter, Anni experimented with a lot materials for textiles, she mixed organic fibers such as cotton , yute wool with industrial materilas such as metal thread.
During the residency I created graphic language in binary, based on the computers language (ones and zeros), to create a series of textiles that contain coded information, for me it´s way to generate textile-memories. I started to experiment with materials and forms. A couple of pieces are woven on a loom with cotton thread and conductive thread. The patternt in the pieces is the code per se; that graphical code can be decoded by the public, and that action is real-life data processing. The other pieces are a series of conductive weavings that emit information in sound or lihgt using the same logic of the graphical code.
